Mats
The mat space is the most important area of any gym or dojo. This is the area where all training takes place, and is respected as such: many schools request that their students bow before stepping onto and off of the mat, and going barefoot or wearing special mat shoes to preserve the quality.
One of the earliest types of mat used by martial arts schools was the tatami, a Japanese invention made from woven rice straw and rushes. The modern mats used today are easier to clean, softer, and more durable. Several different styles are available to meet the needs of different schools. Those with a devoted training space can lay down interlocking Puzzle Mat squares. If you have a shared training facility that needs to alternate between mats and no mats, a folding panel mat can create the space you need.
